When I previewed the decor for our son's first Birthday party to my husband via Facetime there was utter silence. After a little prodding on my part and careful choice of words on his, he finally replied...'It's very, err, pretty?' If Ryan weren't on the opposite side of the globe and Rowan weren't incapable of stringing together a coherent sentence, this party would consist of guns and push ups and manly colors like black and red. Unfortunately for both of them that is not the case, so boho/tribal chic it is!
My inspiration for this milestone came from a stunning deer skull and antlers that my Father found in the woods and graciously gifted me for my 30th Birthday. If you had told me 15 years ago that my favorite present would be a dead animal carcass I probably would have spit my milk in your face. But low and behold they were the genesis for the entire party. As you will come to learn about me, I take great pride in attempting to DIY just about everything and for a fraction of the price. This is often to the detriment of my poor son who knows the thrift store employees on a first name basis at this point. Many yards of fabric, cans of gold spray paint and sticks of butter later, all the decor, favors and food were made by yours truly. Ryan insists that Rowan's aptitude for crawling was sparked by a fear of sitting still and becoming yet another gold fixture in our home. Speaking of which, ignore the lovely crooked candle chandelier in the dining room. Another DIY job on the list ;)
In an effort to make my life easier I decided to make his smash cake a few days before the party. Covered it and popped it in the fridge. Props for being proactive, right? Wrong. Let's just say it took him five mins to even make a dent in it and I'm glad none of our guests were sampling this hockey puck of a delicacy.
